Nirmala Nagpal alias Saroj khan passes away today due to cardiac arrest in Mumbai. She was admitted to hospital few days ago.

Who was Saroj Khan

Nirmala Nagpal, popularly known as Saroj Khan (22 November 1948 – July 2, 2020) was one of the most prominent Indian dance choreographers in Hindi cinema. She was born at the Bombay State (present day Maharashtra), India. With a career span of over forty years, she choreographed more than 2000 songs and is known as “The Mother of Dance/Choreography in India”.

She passed away today due to a sudden cardiac arrest. She was a background dancer in the late 1950s. She learnt dance while working under film choreographer B. Sohanlal. Later, she herself shifted to choreography, first as an assistant choreographer.

later on she got her break as an independent choreographer, with Geeta Mera Naam (1974). However, she had to wait many years to receive acclaim, which came with her work with Sridevi; Hawa Hawai in Mr India (1987), Nagina (1986) and Chandni (1989), and later with Madhuri Dixit, starting with the hit Ek Do Teen in Tezaab (1988), Tamma Tamma Loge in Thanedaar (1990)[1] and Dhak Dhak Karne Laga in Beta (1992).

Saroj Khan, who has won three National Awards for Best Choreography for her work in Devdas, Jab We Met and the 2007 Tamil film Shringaram, is credited with choreographing more than 2,000 songs. 

In a career spanning over four decades, she has choreographed some of the most popular Bollywood tracks such as Ye Ishq Haaye featuring Kareena Kapoor from the 2007 film Jab We Met, Ek Do Teen featuring Madhuri Dixit from Tezaab, Dola Re Dola from Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas, starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Madhuri Dixit and Shah Rukh Khan.

She last choreographed for “Tabaah Hogaye”, featuring Madhuri from filmmaker Karan Johar”s production “Kalank” in 2019.
